Bao, Bentoteca-style. 🐷 Seriously, though, how cute is this little guy? I almost felt bad biting into him, but the buoyant pork, shrimp, and mushroom filling obliterated my guilt. 😉

More pics in my story but first, a shout-out to the wine (swipe left): Forse Sono Fiori from Cretapaglio, a small biodynamic winery in Calabria. This natural wine is made from the indigenous Guardavalle grape and it’s floral (as suggested by the name and dainty label), but also fruity with a touch of mineral, and it’s just simply dreamy. I can’t wait to get my hands on a few bottles as well as try other wines by this excellent producer. 🌸🌼🌺

Decisions, decisions🤔

Dozens of “cascine” (farmhouses) stud Milan’s surroundings, and I learned the hard way that Wednesday is too late to reserve for Il pranzo della domenica. Saturday, yes. Sunday, no — they’re all already “completa.” 🌾

With more than 100 cascine to choose from, it’s easy to forget that a charming cascina lies within the confines of the city itself: @cascinacuccagna , which plays host to one of Milan’s most beloved restaurants, @unpostoamilano (“a place in Milan”). I was told that the 17th-century structure once sat on they city’s outskirts. Yet as Milan expanded outward, the cascina became part of the city proper. 🏙

Sunday lunch here is a little more refined than the other cascine, but equally delicious. I had rusticity on my mind all morning and was going to get the tagliatelle with ragù. But then this house-made turmeric spaghetti with gamberi rossi, tomato confit, crustacean broth, almonds, and toasted bread crumbs caught my eye, and I was torn. So, I went for the dish I’m less likely to make at home. 👩‍🍳

While it’s highly unlikely my ragù is on the same level as that of chef @nicopiko , I’m much less likely to try my hand at this particular spaghetti preparation. So, I went for it. Did I make the right choice? I know so. 🍝 (More from yesterday’s Sunday funday in my story of course!)

I love the rural side of Lombardy and I don’t capitalize on Milan’s beautiful surroundings enough, so I was grateful for the opportunity to visit @berlucchiwine in @franciacorta
yesterday as part of @milanowineweekofficial . As you can see in the pics (more in my story), the light was pure magic! 🥂🏞🌟 A proposito, the orange construction object in the first shot irks me too. I know I could have tried to edit it out, but (as irksome as it is) one could say it adds character.

If you’re not familiar with wine jargon, Franciacorta is just an hour from Milan and the region is known for elegant sparkling wines crafted from what Italians call the “metedo classico,” the French call “méthode traditionnelle,” and English speakers refer to the “classic” or “traditional method” — the method used to make Champagne. 🍾

Berlucchi, the region’s pioneering winery, is a must-visit. The historic estate plays host to a 17th century cellar and a 16th-century mansion, among other gorgeous characteristics. Plus, I got to taste some wine! 🏰

There are three more tours this weekend as part of Milano Wine Week (3pm today and tomorrow, and 10am tomorrow), and you can book one on their website. 🗓

Otherwise, especially if you’re not a local, just book a visit on your own whenever you want and/or the next time you’re in town. 💪

This glass doesn’t contain just any Prosecco. 🍾

You know the saying about having to change to stay the same? Well, it’s a philosophy I appreciate and keep front of mind, taking note when I see it implemented in some shape or form. 🧐

It’s @milanowineweekofficial and yesterday, I attended the @valdo_spumanti masterclass where we tasted seven types of Prosecco from a selection of Valdo’s small-production labels. The highlight was the final wine: Amor Soli (pictured above), Valdo’s “declaration of love to the hills of Valdobbiadene” produced from certified organic Glera grapes. The label is made from grape must residue while Polynature comprises the capsule. Just 1926 bottles (the year Valdo was founded) of the 2020 vintage, its first, are available. It’s delicate with notes of almonds, flowers (definitely white flowers, but think I might have even smelled some wisteria), and white peaches rounded out with gentle minerality.🥂

Valdo is one of the most prolific Prosecco producers and I tip my hat to any initiative that considers the future of our dear planet. Not sure if “changing” is the right word — perhaps “evolving” is more appropriate? Anyhoo, well done, Valdo! 🌎

Stopping to snap the sights on the road to @chateaufayau in Cadillac in Bordeaux. (It’s pronounced ca-dee-yak and there is indeed a connection between the appellation and the automobile manufacturer, but I’ll get to that another time.) ☀️

The cloud of sorts in shots two and three is actually mist rising from the Garonne river and flowing toward the Atlantic Ocean. The enchanting mist isn’t just nature showing off — it helps create the ideal conditions for botrytis (aka noble rot) to grow on grapes like Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. 🌫

As unbecoming as the fungus appears (shots four and five), it’s anything but — the grapes produce the region’s golden (sweet) wines (pic six). More in my story. 🍇🌟💛

In Milan, “Let’s grab breakfast” has become

In Milan, “Let’s grab breakfast” has become the new “Let’s go for an aperitivo,” and I wrote about this for @lacucinaitalianausa (lInk in bio). The opening of several café-like bakeries over the years has gradually shifted the city’s breakfast culture, rendering the first meal of the day as varied, convivial, and relaxed as the cherished pre-dinner drink ritual. 🥐☕️😋

One of the spots included is @lostecafemilano where the brioche pictured above isn’t just any breakfast brioche — it’s called La Salata and it’s filled with ‘nduja and fontina. In the second pic, you might notice how a bit of the inside trickled out and solidified alongside the pastry? This flat little crispy delight reminded me of the “la réligieuse,” the burnt cheese crust that adheres to the bottom of the fondue pot. The third shot offers a glimpse of La Salata’s dreamy innards. 🔥🌶🧀

Also, the cinnamon roll (pic 5) is pretty outstanding. These two pastries couldn’t be more different, and a place that has you torn between the two is doing something right. The solution? Un cinnamon roll da potare via per favore. 👍❤️🙌

Also, for anyone looking to hate on my cappuccino habits, I drank it BEFORE digging into the savory brioche — I promise I didn’t mix and match. 💪😜💃🏻
