It’s Good to be Back

Sunset over the Roman Forum

Well, well, well. I made it through my first trip home since leaving to embark on my new expat life. It had its ups and its downs; I was beyond thrilled to see family and friends but the wretched weather put a damper (pun intended!) on many of my plans so things had to be rescheduled or cancelled or what not. It was dreamy to see and catch up with many of my loved ones, but I’m sorry I didn’t get to spend more time with my family. At the same time, there were so many people I wasn’t able to see, but everything became incredibly overwhelming. I do feel badly that I wasn’t able to manage it all and hope that no one will hold it against me. But to be fair, I wasn’t really on a vacation; I had a lot of work to do. I’m one person who is self-employed and I really underestimated how thinly I would be spread over those four weeks.

I arrived back in Rome three weeks ago and hit the ground running; my friend arranged an airport pick up from a cab driver who runs a car service out of his taxi. Yes, that is highly illegal! Coincidently, I also happen to know his business-partner-cousin who had driven me to the airport on two previous occasions under the same unlawful circumstances.

I went to Milan for a few nights last week and noticed a Vendesi (for sale) sign on one of my favorite buildings, which stands on the corner on the beautiful Corso Magenta and Via Aurelio Saffi. I snapped a shot of the phone number and entertained the idea of scheduling a viewing as buying the building and turning it into something memorable (with the exterior 100% intact!) would have been a dream come true. But the blow from the disappointment of realizing it’s just a pipe dream after indulging the fantasy a bit would have been too difficult to handle, so I opted not to call. Sigh. But on the upside, while in Milan I did learn how to make risotto! And it tasted pretty damn good if I do say so myself.

It’s back to Milan next week for Milano Food & Wine and Identita’ Golose. The latter has a special place in my heart for more reasons than one and last year, it was the first big event I attended in Italy just a few days after arriving in Rome. I had a delightful time and made tons of new friends, so hopefully 2014’s event will be even more extraordinary!

Other than that, I sadly don’t have much other news to report but I guess as the adage goes, no news is good news? I’ve just been hustling and trying by some miracle to get ahead of myself on work as well as studying my tail off for WSET…I realize I will probably fail the exam the first time around, but I’m determined to go down swinging.

Oh, and I still haven’t conquered my jet lag! I don’t get it…I think part of my insomnia has to do with stress from all the bureaucracy I’m encountering in an effort to open a damn Partita IVA. I know that CBD oil can help alleviate stress and anxiety, so maybe I need to try that to combat this insomnia. Italy, why do you have to make it so difficult? I am living here and want to do things the legal way. Stop being your own worst enemy and please, please just let me open my Partita IVA! I’m begging you….pretty, pretty please with a cherry on top. Thank you.

If this insomnia gets any worse, I’m going to have to talk to a doctor about it. It can really mess up your life, we need our sleep! One of my friends back home suffered with the same thing for months and months until her doctor put her on medical marijuana, she said that it helped her a lot and she checked out the fat buddhas guide to making a homemade pipe because she didn’t want to search through hundreds to find the one for her, she just wanted the relief! I may try this as a form of relief at some point. But for now, I just want this insomnia gone! I don’t, however, think I’ll go down the same route as she once did. If I’m going to try this, I’m going to do it properly and with as much research and medical evidence behind me as I can, this way I’m hoping to be able to choose the best products for myself personally, such as this vaporizer at https://www.theherbcollectiveoc.com/single-post/2018/11/21/Brass-Knuckles-Vape-Pen-Review, as just one example of something I might try when I’m able to.
